FASHION: BEN GARRET STITCHES UP ITALIAN SCHOLARSHIP
An extra breath was held in anticipation of the announcement of the winner of the 2008 Modaitalia Scholarship as judges took extra time to decide on a winner. The Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE (MSIT) and the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) in their 6th edition of Modaitalia, have attracted a record number of entries for the coveted $7,000 fashion prize. After a preliminary judging at the MSIT “Pret-a-moda” event earlier this month, Ben Garrett of West End in Brisbane won the prestigious Modaitalia scholarship consisting a flight to Italy and a summer course at the world-renowned Polimoda Institute in Florence. The Modaitalia 2008 final event was held at The Old Museum Building in Brisbane on October 29, 2008.
Entrants in the modaitalia competition were briefed to use Italian culture as the inspiration for their designs, and Ben Garret’s says his work was inspired by “Murano Glass and the simple elegance of the designs”. Christian Bowman an upcoming fashion photographer who has covered the event from behind the lens for the last three years says (referring to one of Garret’s dresses), “I’ve never seen white and simplicity used so beautifully”.
Christian Bowman from Bowman Digital was the online media partner for the event and fashion photos from both the preliminary judging and the final parade will be available after October 31st, 2008. There will also be a fashion video streamed online for the first time in the history of the event featuring and exclusive interview with the winner Ben Garrett.

The Modaitalia scholarship is a highly sort after award, and for some students their entries are 3 years in the making. The judging panel consists of award-winning designers Elio Marzulo from Elio Moda; Pina Fiorenza from Fiorenza Collections; Zena Sciacca frmo Red Cordial and fashion agent guru Maria Lynch from Lynch Fashion Marketing.

2008 Nivea Hand Model of the Year!

Last night I was at the Nivea Annual Hand Modeling Awards and after a year off, I was back in action in the 2007/08 Summer. I didn’t think I had done enough catalogues to get up for the win, but I was able to snare some crucial votes during the February vote count.
Although I didn’t think my work last season was as good as my fall 2004 season with my award winning “VB hard-earned-thirst” beer catalogue. I think my attitude has matured and you can really see that in my modeling.
I had a year off over the 2006/07 summer as a mouth model, and whilst it was great to be the mouth of Evian water, I really missed my hand modeling and couldn’t wait until that contract was over.
Guess was quick to get me on their roster for their autumn watch magazine ads and so I was really lucky to get a “feel” for it all again.
Thanks to all my support. The girls at professionNail, Steve at Minit Solutions for those late night grind sessions, Kelly and Ross at “Your hands is your face” and finally and most importantly, Nivea for the award and the years supply of Nivea Hand Lotion which comes in “handy” just before I go to bed each night. Thank you so much everyone!
