I did a fashion photography shoot up at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast a couple of weeks ago for my new friend Katie Gannon from Mother Maria. I also did some photos for Katie’s sister Krista from Australian Flavour.

The shot above was a spontaneous shot where the model Phoebe was standing there keeping warm from the cool breeze through the trees. The lighting and composition was already set and I had to just take the shot. If you have a look at the gallery you will see that there is another version where you can see the sun peek through the trees. I like them both equally.

The location was at a park at Buderim, with some great big trees all lined up and it gave some really interesting (and hard to work with) lighting. I used an external flash bounced off a reflector board most of the day to give just enough fill whilst still allowing natural lighting.

I use my Canon 5D and a 85mm 1.8 Lens most of the day and I was able to get some really sharp photos, particularly when the sun went down and we were getting some shots outside of the park and in the playground and in front of the trees. The shot above is an example of that.

The models were Roz Kelly (Vivien’s Models, Sunshine Coast - Channel 7) and her beautiful roommate Phoebe. The photo above is with both models at the end, and Katie next to me on the left and her sister Krista the right in the photo.

It was great working with these girls, they made it a fun day to shoot and it’s great getting to know Katie and Krista.

  1. I really like the way the light is filtered through the trees, and the deep, verdant shadows and lush vibrant greens playing against each other. It has a sort of “lost in the woods” feel to it, and a strange nostalgia. It also reminds me of fairytales like Hansel and Gretel… Not sure why! I love the bright colours.
