It appears the Microsoft are targeting university students by this news of University of Texas-Pan America securing a deal with the software giant to take on 17,000 odd email accounts. It seems pretty smart on Microsoft’s behalf to do “any” deal for the education segment. They can direct the future academics to use software when they graduate, and most important for the short term, direct them to use the upcoming Windows Live system.

Whilst this isn’t the first such deal for Microsoft, this news report does make reference to Walter Harp, Microsoft’s senior product manager in charge of the Windows Live@edu project. He’s quoted saying “Our communication assets (e-mail, MSN messenger) are one great way to add new people onto our network and establish lifetime loyalty”. Pretty obvious, but the thought is scary if no one else is doing anything better. Google needs to get a move on if they wish to acquire a decent share on this market.
