Today recently retired Mal Michael was announced to have signed a two-year contract with Essendon. Only six weeks after Michael had announced his retirement from football and the Brisbane Lions, the AFL full-back known as “Man Mountain”, is now part of the Essendon Bombers.

The 29 year-old had made it known that he was leaving the sport to pursue interests he has in PNG where he is originally from. Acting on good faith, the Lions had delisted Michael to allow him to start his endeavours elsewhere in life.

The lions appear to be most disappointed in this turn of events, as it exploits a bit of a loophole in the AFL draft system. Once again the Lions find themselves in a grey area and are taking action with the AFL.

My personal stance is that things do change over time, and even over short periods of time, decisions can easily be overturned in the mind. Unfortunately for the Brisbane Lions, they come out with nothing, but I truly believe Mal Michael did not plan on this 6 weeks ago.
